Itinerary: Arequipa & Colca Canyon Extension

DAY 1

The extension begins with a flight into the colonial city of Arequipa.  It is affectionately known as the “White City” because of the many buildings made of ‘sillar’, the white volcanic rock that abounds in the area  Upon arrival you will be met by your guide and given a city tour that includes  the Plaza de Armas,  and the beautiful Santa Catalina Convent. a beautiful Franciscan convent built in the mid 17^th century.  Overnight at the Casa Andina Hotel (B, L)

DAY 2

Today you depart for the Colca Canyons, twice the depth of the Grand Canyons and home to the giant Andean Condor.  The journey will pass through the Aguada Blanca National Reserve, home to roving herds of Vicuña and cross the Mirador de los Condores, a  pass that offers spectacular views of snow capped Misti and Chachani Volcanoes.  Once through the pass, you begin the long descent into the town of Chivay and the Casa Andina Hotel  (B,L)

DAY 3

An early morning breakfast and you’re off to the Cruz del Condor, a natural observatory for viewing the deepest parts of the Colca Canyon and the flight of the imposing Andean Condor.  Before leaving Chivay, we spend a bit of time in the relaxing hotsprings of La Calera.  By mid afternoon you will be back in Arequipa, ready to catch your return flight to Lima.  Overnight Jose Antonio Hotel  (B,L)

NOTE:  For those on the Machu Picchu Empire Tour,  when you return to Lima, you will conclude  with your regularly scheduled day 10 from the original tour.
