Most travelers associate Peru with the Andes and the Inca
Civilization, yet nearly two-thirds of Peru is Amazon rain forest and home to
some of the richest biodiversity on the planet. With over half of the
remaining rain forest on earth, the Amazon hosts a staggering array of life with
over 400 species of mammals, 2,000 species of fish, 300 reptiles, 1,700 birds
and more than 50,000 plants. This, in combination with some of the most
accessible and comfortable eco lodges in the entire Amazon Basin, has caused
jungle ecotourism to explode.
Cusco is the gateway to excursions into the Southern Amazon and the two
principle destinations on Tambopata and Manu. Most first time visitors to
the Amazon will choose Tambopata, as it offers an exceptional jungle experience
for less cost and time. Puerto Maldonado, a half hour flight from Cusco, is the
jumping-off point for our excursions to Sandoval Lake and Posada Amazonas
Lodges.
Manu, the “crown jewel” of the Amazon and one of the
largest protected natural areas in the Americas, is the most complicated, time
consuming and expensive to visit as it involves both air, land and river travel
to access. Our destination is the acclaimed Manu Wildlife Center.
