Grindstone Island, or “Illes aux Meulles” as it was called by the first French settlers, was famous all up and down the Atlantic seaboard during the 18th and 19th centuries for its high quality sandstone. Not only was it a great source of building and milling stones but the tiny island yielded a grit of stone that was highly sought after in the United States for the turning down of cannon barrels. Today this legacy has yielded to time and now the island hosts the largest Great Blue Heron colony in the Bay of Fundy, Peregrine Falcons and other bird species. Join us on this unique paddle and island day adventure as we explore one of Fundy’s most famous islands.
