THE BAT STORY
![]() |
Most things people know about bats aren’t even true – they are not blind, most don’t suck blood and they don’t get tangled in your hair. With nearly1000 bats species, they constitute nearly one quarter of all mammals on earth. Unfortunately, bat populations are in alarming decline worldwide and in North America, bats are the most endangered land mammal with more than half of the species listed or designated as endangered.
Like most animals, bats suffer from habitat loss and environmental pollution, but the primary cause of their decline is wanton destruction by humans.
Although there are several species of bats in New Brunswick, the most common is the Little Brown Bat (Myotis Lucifugus). From October to May, these bats are creatures of the underworld, hibernating in the local caves and mines only to emerge in the summer months to feed on insects and live in our world. Bat folklore has abounded throughout the ages and what better place to delve into the mysteries of these flying mammals than in the Bat Room, our final destination on our “White Caves Adventure”.
